Lake Tahoe in December gives you mountain views, Christmas lights, winter activities, and quiet time by the lake in one weekend. For this trip, stay in South Lake Tahoe and keep most of the itinerary nearby. Winter weather can make driving slower, so avoid circling the lake or spending hours moving between stops.

This itinerary works well for a Friday evening arrival and Sunday afternoon departure. It also works if early December arrives without much snow.

Friday: Christmas Lights at Heavenly Village

After checking into your hotel, head to Heavenly Village for dinner and your first look at Tahoe during the holidays.

Heavenly Village runs its Heavenly Holidays celebration throughout December. For 2026, its 65 foot Christmas tree will light up at 5:30 PM every evening through Christmas, with Santa joining the lighting. The village also has an outdoor ice rink surrounded by shops and restaurants.

Walk along the cobblestone paths and explore the village’s shops, restaurants and nearby casinos. Stop at Earthbound Trading Company for gifts and home decor, Rocket Fizz for candy and unusual sodas or Village Toys if you’re travelling with kids. The village has more than 40 shops, so there is plenty to browse without driving anywhere else.

For dinner, look at Base Camp Pizza, Azul Latin Kitchen, or Kalani’s without leaving the village. Then watch the tree lighting and go ice skating if there is still time. The rink operates during winter, weather permitting.

Check the Heavenly Holidays schedule before visiting because additional events happen on certain December dates.

Saturday: Ride the Heavenly Gondola, Walk Along Lake Tahoe

Start Saturday at the Heavenly Gondola, which leaves directly from Heavenly Village. The gondola travels about 2.4 miles up the mountain. Stop at the Observation Deck along the way for wide views across Lake Tahoe and the Sierra Nevada. This is one of the easiest ways to get a mountain view without spending the day skiing.

For the 2026 season, Heavenly began winter operations on November 20. Sightseeing from the Heavenly Village Gondola is scheduled from 9 AM to 4 PM, though mountain operations can change with weather and snow conditions.

Give yourself most of the morning rather than rushing back down. Take photos from the observation area, spend some time on the mountain, and add winter tubing or riding the mountain coaster if it’s operating during your visit.

Check Heavenly’s current operating hours before buying tickets or heading to the gondola.

After lunch, head to Camp Richardson Resort Beach for a quieter afternoon by Lake Tahoe.

The beach is open year round and stretches for about a quarter mile along the southwest shore. From the water, look across the lake toward Heavenly Mountain and Cave Rock on the opposite shore.

Walk along the shoreline, take in the mountain views, and stay for a while instead of treating it as a quick photo stop. December brings a completely different feel from summer, with colder air, fewer visitors, and the possibility of snow along the shore and surrounding peaks.

Most of the resort’s summer beach activities will not be running, so come for the scenery rather than rentals or water activities.

If the sky is clear, stay into the late afternoon before heading back toward South Lake Tahoe for dinner.

Head back to Heavenly Village after sunset. Skate beneath the lights at the outdoor rink or for a warmer indoor option, The Loft Theatre hosts its Magic Fusion show inside Heavenly Village.

Sunday: See Emerald Bay If the Roads Are Clear

Check the weather and Highway 89 conditions before leaving South Lake Tahoe on Sunday.

If the road is clear, drive about 12 miles north toward Emerald Bay State Park. Stop near the Emerald Bay overlook for the view across the bay and Fannette Island, Lake Tahoe’s only island.

Keep this visit focused on the overlook. Vikingsholm sits down by the water, but reaching it requires a steep walk that drops hundreds of feet. Tours also end for the season in September. Snow and ice can make the trail much harder in December.

California State Parks notes that chains or four wheel drive are frequently required around Emerald Bay in winter. Skip the drive if Highway 89 is snowy, icy, or closed.

If Emerald Bay is not a good option, stay near Heavenly Village and walk into Van Sickle Bi State Park instead. The park grounds remain open during winter for walking, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing, although vehicle access, restrooms, and other facilities close for the season.

Then grab brunch and start the drive home.

Want to Ski or Snowboard?

Turn Saturday into a full ski day if skiing or snowboarding is the main reason for visiting Tahoe.

With Heavenly’s 2026 winter season opening on November 20, skiing and riding is scheduled from 9 AM to 4 PM. Opening dates and available terrain still depend on snow and weather.

What If There Isn’t Much Snow?

Early December does not guarantee fresh snow. Keep the trip if the roads and weather are good.

If the trails are dry enough, Van Sickle Bi State Park also gives you an outdoor option within walking distance of Heavenly Village.

Treat skiing, tubing, and snowshoeing as bonuses rather than building the entire weekend around snow conditions.

Before Driving to Lake Tahoe in December

Check the weather and road conditions before leaving home and again before driving toward Emerald Bay.

Winter storms can bring chain controls to Highway 50 and other Tahoe roads. Under California’s R2 controls, most all wheel drive and four wheel drive vehicles with qualifying snow tires may continue without installing chains, but they still need to carry traction devices. Conditions can change quickly.

Check Caltrans QuickMap for current chain controls, closures, traffic, and road cameras before driving.

Final Thoughts

Spend Friday night under the Christmas lights at Heavenly Village. Ride the Heavenly Gondola and walk along Lake Tahoe on Saturday. Then see Emerald Bay Sunday morning if winter road conditions cooperate.

That gives you mountain views, time by the water, holiday activities, and winter scenery without spending the whole weekend driving around Lake Tahoe.
