Five years ago, my family and I left Dublin, Ireland, for California, and I’ve never looked back. Today, I want to share the journey of another Dublin family who made a similar leap. My name is Jake, and our decision to move to California was driven by career opportunities, but what we found here was so much more.
The lifestyle, the culture, the people — California has it all. It’s not just about sunny beaches and palm trees. For us, it became a place of growth, discovery, and opportunity. Here’s why I believe California offers some of the best reasons to pack up and start fresh.
1. Perfect Weather Year-Round

One of the main reasons I love living in California is the heavenly weather. The climate here is as diverse as its residents. In the north, you can experience incredible fog, especially during summer evenings. California’s Mediterranean-like climate means hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters.
Living along the coast, summer temperatures are usually around 70 to 80 degrees. Very cold days are rare unless you’re in mountainous regions. This is perfect for us as it allows for weekend beach trips to beautiful coastal spots like Huntington Beach, just a 30-minute drive away.
2. A Melting Pot of Cultures

California is one of the most diverse states in the US, and this is a huge reason why I love living here. It’s a melting pot of different cultures, with people from all over the world adding to the vibrant mix. This cultural diversity enriches our community and offers countless opportunities to experience different traditions, cuisines, and perspectives.
The influx of foreign visitors also enhances this cultural blend, making California a truly unique and exciting place to live.
3. Live the Outdoor Lifestyle

California has an outdoor lifestyle that’s perfect for me and my family. One of our favorite spots is Anaheim Hills, with its riding and walking trails, as well as Coves Park. These places are great for outdoor walks and enjoying nature.
Many people think of big cities like Los Angeles when they think of California, but there are so many other places to explore. My daughter loves Yorba Regional Park, and some of my favorite moments are taking her there each week.
4. Limitless Career Opportunities

California has the 5th largest economy in the world which is insane that a state can compete with countries like that. However it isn’t surprising given that Apple, Google and Disney headquarters are situated here.
There are so many massive companies here that employ people from all over the world. This is why I originally moved here, for work opportunities.
The work culture here is also very different to Ireland which is where I was working before. They are much more progressive here and offer a wide range of working styles depending on your commitments out of work.
For example, it is much easier to work from home here than it was back in Ireland. I love being able to work from home. It really allows you to get work done on your own terms and gives you freedom to do other things and be around your family more.
If you are in the tech game then this is the city for you. There are so many opportunities to work for massive corporations and earn your way up.
Plus, there is no better place on the planet to start a business than California due to its strong economy which will help your business grow at a rapid speed. California is also a tech utopia which means there is a lot of opportunity for investment and grants.
The culture here also encourages innovation whereas a lot of other cities discourage it and even mock it. This is why I love it here so much as it encourages people to be different and be themselves no matter what.
5. Incredible Food Scene

The food scene in California is like no other because of the massive agriculture economy that produces half of the vegetables, fruits and nuts grown in the whole of the USA. On top of that it has an incredible wine industry so if you like wine there is no better place to be. If you come to visit or move it is criminal not to try a Mission burrito in San Francisco or the famous food trucks in L.A.
6. Experience Wine Country

If you love wine, then there is no better place on Earth than California. The wine scene here is unrivaled. Places like Napa Valley and Sonoma are some of the best places to go for wine in the world. I have visited these places a few times and the wine is unlike anywhere I have ever been before. This is because California produces 90% of wine in the whole of the USA.
7. Nightlife That Never Sleeps

The nightlife in California is incredibly vibrant, offering more bars, clubs, and pubs than you can imagine. Some of my favorite spots include The Ranch Saloon, Rise Rooftop Lounge, and The Blind Rabbit. These are just a few of the many fantastic places to enjoy a night out.
8. Breathtaking Natural Landscapes

California’s diverse landscapes are overwhelming. My personal favorites are Joshua Tree National Park and Death Valley National Park. Death Valley captivates with its stunning canyons and desert-like feel, while Joshua Tree offers a similar desert experience with its unique rock formations and Joshua trees.
The contrast in nature across California is unparalleled. Some regions like the redwoods are lush and green, while others are arid deserts. No other state offers such a dramatic and beautiful contrast in natural landscapes.
9. Exciting Events All Year Long

The number of massive events and festivals in California is unbelievable. It feels like there’s an A-list artist performing every week. For instance, I’m excited to see Post Malone this year. Festivals and events are constantly happening, making it the place to be for those who love parties and live music.
Popular festivals include Coachella, a world-renowned music and arts festival in Indio or the Monterey Jazz Festival, one of the longest-running jazz festivals in the world. If you’re a fan of festivals and vibrant events, California will not disappoint.
10. World-Class Educational Institutions

If you’re moving to California with your family, education will be a top priority, but there’s no need to worry. California has an excellent education system, featuring some of the best colleges in the country.
Prestigious universities like Stanford, UC Berkeley, and UCLA attract students from all over the world. Additionally, the state’s high school education system is highly regarded, offering a variety of programs and resources to make sure students succeed. This strong educational foundation is a key reason many families choose to move to California.
11. Unmatched Entertainment and Arts

California has some of the world’s best museums. I’ve tried to go to as many of them as I can but there are so many – it is a mammoth of a task. My favorites so far have been the Getty Center and the Museum of Contemporary Art. There are so many more that are also amazing but these were definitely my top two.
Should You Move To California?
When it comes to deciding whether or not to move to California, it’s a no-brainer – the answer is “YES!” The only tough decision is choosing which of the many incredible cities to call home. But Anaheim, LA and San Diego are my personal favorites as I’ve spent the most time there. Each city offers a unique lifestyle, making California a great choice for anyone considering a move.
