With its stunning coastline, towering trees, and scenic mountain vistas, California is a land of remarkable contrasts.
As Californians, we understand that packing for a trip to this dynamic state can be a bit overwhelming due to its ever-changing weather and varied terrain.
If you’re wondering how to prepare for your California journey, what to bring, and what weather to expect, we’ve created a straightforward packing list to guide you.
California Packing List: Essentials
How should I prepare for a trip to California? Before you plan your trip, it can be helpful to research what activities and sites are available in your destination. Because California has so much to offer, this packing list provides the essentials you need for your vacation.
It will help you prepare for all kinds of fun (and even a little bit of adventure) when visiting Los Angeles, San Francisco, and more! From clothing, shoes, and electronics—they all play a part in your trip experience. Check out below for a checklist on what to pack for California.
Packing Essentials:
1. 6 Set Packing Cubes: An absolute must and a much better option than Ziploc bags.

2. Carry-On Luggage: This 4-wheel spinner that’s also lightweight. A carry-on bag is essential if you’re flying, but even if you’re driving or catching a train, carry-on luggage is most convenient.

You don’t want to be stuck with too many heavy bags all week, and there are some things that will be easier to carry than others.
Clothing:
Unless you’re going somewhere very remote, you won’t need more than a week worth of clothes. Pick items that mix and match easily so you can wear them multiple times.
3. Two-Three Pants: You’ll want pants that are comfortable enough to wear on long drives and hikes — something without constricting waistbands or zippers and buttons that could dig into your skin.

If you’re planning to hike in the mountains or go off-roading, consider bringing pants made with quick-dry material or water-resistant fabric. Jeans might be appropriate for dinner in the city, but they aren’t ideal for hikes and other activities.
4. Three-Four Shirts/Tops: If you’re planning to hike, pack sweat-resistant tops that you also don’t mind getting dirty.

5. One-Two Pieces of Fancy Wear: California is filled with fancy restaurants, night entertainment, and fun events. Pack them to wear for those occasions.

Outerwear:
6. Scarf: California’s winds can get intense but don’t let it scare you!

7. Jacket: California’s warm days can turn chilly at night, so bring a lightweight jacket (or two).

A hoodie is great for most of the state, but outerwear with more insulation will come in handy if you’re heading to the mountains, like Yosemite National Park. In general, it’s a good idea to pack one warmer layer, like a fleece or a down jacket.
Shoes:
8. Walking Shoes: Seriously, bring good walking shoes – you’ll probably be walking more than you do at home!

9. Hiking Shoes: If you’re in California, hiking is very likely in your itinerary.

10. Fancy Shoes: The kind that goes well with any fancy wear.

Toiletries:
The rule of thumb is 3.4 oz or less for all liquids in your carry-on for flying. Most hotels will have shampoo/conditioner and body wash available. If not, bring travel sizes of these items (1-2 oz) for your time away from home. But make sure to not forget these at home:
11. Toothpaste

12. Toothbrush: Essential items to keep fresh!

13. Facial Cleanser: Hotel soaps can be harsh for the face. We use this Clean & Clear product that’s oil-free and helps with our acne breakouts.

14. Vaseline Lip Balm: You’d be surprised how often your lips get dry even with this California weather. Add this to your bag.

15. Lotion: Speaking of preventing dry lips, make sure your face isn’t dry either. I use Aveeno’s.

16. Wet Wipes/Hand Sanitizer: These come in handy no matter where you go.

17. Contact Lens Case With Solution: If you wear contacts, make sure to carry a travel size lens solution.

18. Eyeglasses Case: If you wear eyeglasses, make sure to carry a case that protects your eyeglasses when you’re not using them.

19. Hair Brush: With the windy weather, you might be combing your hair more than once a day! This two-piece set is suitable for all kinds of hair and for anyone!

20. Deodorant: I use the Dove deodorant and that keeps me smelling good for days.

21. Sunhat: Protect your head on a sunny day. This hat blocks 98% of UV rays by offering UPF 50+ sun protection.

22. Sunscreen: Bring SPF 30 or higher. Reapply it every 2-4 hours if you’re outside. This 40 SPF colorless product is our go-to and we’ve been using this for years.

23. Sunglasses: This 3-pack polarized sunglasses provides 100% UV protection.

24. Reusable Water Bottle: Durable bottle that’s 100% leak proof. Include an empty water bottle in your carry-on to fill up once you’ve passed through security; this will help keep you hydrated during flights without having to pay for expensive bottled water at the airport.

25. Medications: Make sure to take what you require and a little more – just in case. Make sure to pack any medications in your carry-on luggage so that they’re not damaged or lost during transit.

Electronics:
26. Your Phone

27. Phone Charger: Pack 2-3 phone chargers in case you lose one.

28. Portable Charger: Get this 2-pack compact power bank.

29. Mirrorless Digital Camera: We use this Sony A6400 with the 16-50mm and 55-210mm power zoom lenses and love it! We enjoy capturing California’s beauty through this camera lens and always go back to the photos to reminisce our travels.

30. Camera Backpack: We use the LowePro camera backpack. It’s compact and can handle more than just the camera parts.

31. Camera Tripod: We use this AmazonBasics one. It’s lightweight and compact which makes it easy to carry when we hike.

32. Amazon Kindle: Ever wanted to just sit at the beach or sit among the trees and read a nice book but no space to pack your books? Get this Kindle that doesn’t support ads.

Flying Tip: Tote only your essentials. Leave behind any valuables and unnecessary items; anything you might regret losing if your luggage doesn’t arrive when you do. Pack essential toiletries in a zip-top bag that’s easy to access in case the TSA needs to inspect it separately, but don’t forget to put it back in your suitcase before heading home.
Hiking Essentials

Weather-wise, the biggest difference between northern and southern California is the frequency of fog in San Francisco compared to Los Angeles (and much of the rest of the state).
Fog can range from light overcast to thick enough that you can’t see far in front of you. The weather will also be colder in northern California. If you’re going hiking anywhere along the coast or near the redwoods, be prepared for unexpected weather changes.
The wind can pick up very quickly if a storm rolls in off the ocean, so make sure that your tent is staked down securely (if you’re camping) or it might end up flying down the beach while you chase after it.
33. National Parks Pass + Park Map: You can get a hard copy of the map at the park’s visitor center or access a web version from the National Parks Service site.

34. Light Jacket: Helpful for chilly mornings and evenings.

35. Insect Repellent: Plant-based formula and lasts more than 2 hours

36. First Aid Kit: Compact case with 348 items

37. Flashlight: A good idea when surrounded by giant trees that close up sunlight.

Beach Day Essentials

LA is known for its warm weather most of the year, so expect to see a lot of people in shorts, flip-flops, and t-shirts. You’ll want to bring those items with you if you plan on exploring the beach towns such as Malibu or Santa Monica.
If you plan on going into the ocean, consider bringing a swimsuit. If you forget one, don’t worry: The shops along the boardwalk in Venice Beach will have plenty of them for sale.
Since the sun can be intense in LA during the summer, we recommend bringing sunscreen. It’s also a good idea to wear sunglasses and a sunhat when walking around during the day.
38. Beach Towel: Bring 2-3 towels. The sand is soft, but it’s also hot. A towel gives you a place to sit and can help protect your car seats on the way home.

39. Beach/Picnic Blanket: Sand proof and waterproof. Perfect for up to 6 people.

40. Swimwear: Planning to take a swim? Pack or buy a new suit. Or if you’re surfing, then make sure to grab your wetsuit.

41. Swimwear Coverups: Hanging out the whole day at the beach? Grab a coverup to wear when exploring the beach town.

42. Flip Flops: It’s not the best feeling to get sand in your daily footwear. Pack these to wear on the beach day.

43. Waterproof Phone Case: Take those Instagrammable photos in the ocean without getting your phone wet with this waterproof phone case.

Road trip Essentials

California is a huge state, and California road trips can take many forms. When you’re on the road, it’s important that you have all the essentials with you.
And while there are plenty of general things you’ll want to pack for any road trip, there are a few key items to bring along for any trip to California.
44. Car First Aid Kit: In case of any accidents

45. Snow Chains: Highly recommended when driving on snow or/and icy roads

46. Travel Size Hand Sanitizers: Keep these 2 oz bottles in the car

47. Video Camera: Protect driving, even in low light while also retaining quality video

48. Car Windshield Sun Shade: When parked for a while, your car can get super hot! Prevent it with this easy-to-use sunshade.

49. Portable Air Compressor: When our tire pressure goes down, this small but handy compressor will help you out! We’ve used this a couple of times during our road trips.

50. Jumpstart Kit: Jumpstart dead car batteries back to life. Includes LED flashlight.

51. Emergency Flashlight: This multi-functional flashlight can also break windows and cut seat belts.

What’s the weather like in California?
California has a Mediterranean climate, which means that most of the state is characterized by hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. In most places, the wet season lasts from October through April, while the rainless season lasts from May through September.
However, some parts of the state can receive rain year-round. The average temperatures range from 66 F (19 C) to 85 F (29.4 C). In winter, temperatures range from 39 F (4 C) to 64 F (17.8 C).
Summer is California’s busiest time of year, which isn’t surprising considering its weather. Spring and fall are less busy, but still quite pleasant. Winter is the quietest time to visit California.
However, it can rain heavily in some parts of the state. But California is considered a year-round destination so you can visit anytime and have a great time!
The climate varies from region to region: coastal areas tend to be more temperate, while inland areas are hotter in summer and colder in winter. It also varies what time of year you’re planning to visit.
For example, if you’re visiting Los Angeles in July, bring lightweight clothing and sunscreen — you’ll want to stay cool! If you’re hiking the Pacific Crest Trail in January, however, bring layers and waterproof gear: you’ll want to stay warm and dry!
But that’s not all you need to bring. Use the California packing list above to make sure you’re carrying the essentials.
What should I wear in California?
So now that you know what the weather is like, you’re thinking about what to wear. Here, most Californians wear laidback attire that best suits the coastal climate – California casual attire. California casual attire is the type of wear you would wear in a chill setting.
It’s comfortable, relaxed, and cool. But it can be so much more than just loungewear. With the right accessories and styling, you can take your trendy California casual outfit from day to night with little effort at all.
The best way to dress for California’s climate is by layers. California weather is unpredictable. Even though the state has a Mediterranean climate, which generally means warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters, the weather is not always that predictable.
Plus many places in California have a microclimate, so while it may be hot or cold in one area, it could be the complete opposite somewhere just a few minutes away (and sometimes within the same city).
So layers are the key to dressing for California’s climate. It can be cool in the morning and hot in the afternoon or vice versa. So start with something thin, like a t-shirt. Then add a button-up shirt or sweater.
Finally, top it off with a jacket that can be taken off if it gets too warm. The layers will help prevent you from being too hot or too cold.
What should I pack for a week in California?
Try to pack light by using the golden rule for packing: pack half the clothes you were planning to pack. Make sure you have no more than two pairs of jeans and three shirts.
The rest of your clothes should be lightweight, such as shorts and T-shirts. Bring comfy shoes and one pair of open-toed shoes. If you plan to do a specific activity (hiking, diving, swimming, etc.), pack those essentials too.
What should I pack for a 5 day trip to California?
Spending a Monday-Friday work trip here? For a 5 day trip to California, other than your office essentials, pack at least 2 pairs of jeans, 2 tops, and a light jacket.
You will also want to bring at least 3 pairs of shoes: a pair of sneakers, flat shoes/sandals and something dressier.
If you plan to explore city nightlife (which you definitely should!), bring one or two party-fancy tops, so you can go out to a fancy dinner in one of California’s many fine restaurants, or have drinks at one of its trendy bars.
What should I pack for California in summer?
We recommend bringing a couple of tank tops or halter tops, depending on the weather forecast. You’ll want something cool and light that will keep you comfortable as you explore all that California has to offer.
For example, you’ll want something light and breathable as you hike up the hills around San Francisco, or as you bike along the beaches in Santa Monica.
What should I wear in Los Angeles?
Layers work best and make sure you’re wearing sunglasses, sunhat and sunscreen to protect yourself from the LA sunny days. For outfits, make sure to pack for beach day and hiking trips.
How long should you vacation in California?
Forever! (For someone living in California, I may be biased!) California is a big state and there’s a lot to see. If you want to stick to a single location, you can certainly do that — but if you’re looking for a well-rounded tour of The Golden State, stay for at least 10-15 days.
Here’s how long we’d recommend each stop on the following itinerary:
- (2 days) San Francisco
- Must-See: Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, Fisherman’s Wharf
- (2 days) Yosemite National Park
- Must-See: Tunnel View, Yosemite Falls, Glacier Point
- (1 day) The Monterey Peninsula
- Must-See: Monterey, 17-Mile Drive, Carmel by the Sea
- (1 day) Drive through Hwy 101
- Must-See: Big Sur, Pismo Beach, Santa Barbara and stop at the road turnouts for the Pacific Ocean views
- (2 days) Los Angeles
- Must-See: Disneyland, Hollywood, Universal Studios, beaches in Malibu/Santa Monica/Venice Beach
However, California has so much more to offer than just its major cities and attractions. There are stunning national parks (other than Yosemite), beautiful towns and villages, incredible vineyards, and nature that needs to be explored.
