If you’re hoping to see fall colors in Northern California this year, Nevada City is one of my favorite places to add to your list. With its historic downtown, Victorian homes, and tree lined streets, it’s especially pretty once the leaves start changing.

Fall colors typically develop throughout October, with some of the best color often appearing from mid to late October and into November. So if you’re planning a day trip over the next few weeks, this is a great time to start thinking about when to go.

I put together this 1-day Nevada City itinerary focused entirely on fall colors, including a self guided walk through town and an easy trail where you can see even more seasonal foliage.

One Day Nevada City Fall Colors Itinerary

9:30 AM: Start with the Victorian Fall Colors Tour

Start the morning in downtown Nevada City with the Victorian California Fall Colors Tour.

The self guided walk starts at the Nevada City Chamber of Commerce at 132 Main Street and takes about 1 to 2 hours. It winds through downtown and some of Nevada City’s historic residential streets, so you get the fall colors along with the Victorian homes and historic buildings that make the town so pretty this time of year.

Along the way, keep an eye out for the red maple near the Chamber, dogwood in Callanan Park, American sweetgum along Broad Street, big leaf maple near Cottage and Main Streets, and the large tulip tree near North Pine and East Broad Street.

The route roughly takes you through:

Main Street → Callanan Park → Broad Street → Spring Street → Mill Street → Cottage Street → School Street → North Pine Street → East Broad Street

There are a few steeper sections, so wear comfortable walking shoes and give yourself plenty of time for photos rather than trying to rush through it.

You can also save the Chamber’s Nevada City Fall Colors Map to your phone before you go. It marks many of the best pockets of color around town and makes it easy to see where you might want to wander a little farther.

11:30 AM: Take a Quick Detour Around Nevada Street

Once you finish the main walking tour, spend a little extra time around Nevada Street.

This area is also marked on the Nevada City Fall Colors Map, and it’s a nice way to see a few more colorful residential streets without committing to another long walk.

Don’t make this a major stop. Think of it as a short scenic detour before lunch. If the colors look good when you visit, you can always stay a little longer.

12:00 PM: Take a Lunch Break Downtown

Head back into downtown Nevada City for lunch. Keep this part flexible instead of planning your entire day around a specific restaurant. There are plenty of places around downtown, and it gives you the freedom to choose whatever looks good when you’re there.

1:30 PM: Walk the Cascade Canal Trail

After lunch, leave downtown and spend the afternoon at Cascade Canal Trail. Instead of colorful trees lining historic streets, you’ll be walking through a quiet forest with Douglas firs, dogwoods, and big leaf maples. The trail is mostly level, so you don’t have to plan a strenuous hike to enjoy it.

If you want even more color, you can also walk part of the Orene Wetherall Trail. The Nevada City Chamber highlights this area for its red, bronze, and yellow fall foliage when the dogwoods and big leaf maples start changing.

You can read more about Cascade Canal and the other recommended fall trails in the Chamber’s guide to fall trails around Nevada City.

Plan on spending about 1 to 2 hours here. You definitely don’t need to complete a long hike. Walk as far as you feel like, enjoy the scenery, and turn around when you’re ready.

Final Thoughts

If you’re planning a fall day trip to Nevada City, focus your time on the areas that give you the most variety in one day: the historic downtown streets, the residential neighborhoods along the Victorian Fall Colors Tour, and the quieter forest scenery around Cascade Canal Trail.

The downtown portion is best for seeing colorful trees against Nevada City’s Victorian buildings, while Cascade Canal Trail gives you a completely different setting with dogwoods, big leaf maples, and forest views. Together, they give you a good mix of town and nature without making the day feel rushed.

Because fall color timing can shift from year to year, it’s worth checking the Nevada City Chamber’s latest fall color updates before you go. If the leaves are still early, you can still enjoy the walk and historic streets, but if you’re hoping for the strongest reds, oranges, and yellows, try to time your visit for when local reports show the color is developing or nearing peak.
