Fall is one of the best times for a California weekend getaway. Temperatures cool down, summer crowds thin out, and destinations that can feel busy in warmer months often become much more relaxed.
If you’re planning a November trip, these five places give you very different experiences, from redwoods and ocean cliffs to wine country and mountain towns.
1. Mendocino
Choose Mendocino if you want a quiet coastal weekend with plenty of scenery and very little rushing around. Fall brings cooler weather and fewer crowds, making it a nice time to slow down and enjoy the coast.
Start with Mendocino Headlands State Park, where trails wrap around the village with views of sea stacks, cliffs, and the Pacific Ocean. If you want redwoods too, drive a few miles north to Russian Gulch State Park, which combines forest trails, a beach cove, coastal headlands, and a 36 foot waterfall. Pack layers because the coast can shift quickly between fog, sun, and wind.
2. Paso Robles
Paso Robles works if you want a weekend built around wineries, restaurants, and countryside rather than a packed sightseeing schedule. Fall is harvest season, so vineyards are active and daytime temperatures can still be pleasant while evenings get cooler.
Instead of trying to visit as many wineries as possible, choose two or three from the Paso Robles wine country and leave time to explore downtown Paso Robles between tastings. Fall is a popular time to visit, so reserve winery tastings and dinner ahead of time.
In the evening, consider adding Sensorio to your itinerary. The outdoor attraction covers the rolling hills outside Paso Robles with large scale light installations. It operates on select evenings, so check the schedule before planning your weekend around it.
3. Big Bear Lake
For a true mountain getaway, head to Big Bear Lake. Fall in Big Bear brings cooler temperatures, colorful trees, hiking, lake views, and a quieter atmosphere before the busy winter season.
Spend the morning on a trail or near the lake, then walk around Big Bear Lake Village for restaurants, shops, and coffee. Staying overnight in a cabin makes it easy to turn the trip into a cozy weekend rather than a long day trip.
If you visit in November, pay extra attention to driving conditions. Big Bear recommends checking its travel and road information before heading into the mountains. Weather can change quickly at higher elevations, and drivers should be prepared for winter conditions later in the season.
4. Julian
Julian is one of the easiest places to find a classic fall atmosphere in Southern California. The historic Gold Rush town sits more than 4,000 feet above sea level in the Cuyamaca Mountains and is known for apples, pie, mountain scenery, and a compact Main Street filled with historic buildings.
Apple picking is usually strongest earlier in the season, so for a November visit focus more on exploring the town itself. Walk along Main Street, get a slice of Julian’s famous apple pie, learn about the town’s Gold Rush history, and browse the local shops.
If you want to spend part of the weekend outdoors, you can also add a hike at Volcan Mountain Preserve or William Heise County Park.
5. Idyllwild
Choose Idyllwild if you want a peaceful mountain weekend without making the entire trip about hiking. The town sits above 5,000 feet in the San Jacinto Mountains and combines pine forests and granite peaks with art galleries, independent shops, restaurants, and cabin style lodging.
Spend part of the day walking through town and visiting the galleries and shops. If you want to hike, the surrounding San Jacinto Mountains offer plenty of trails, including Deer Springs Trail, which leads into the San Jacinto Wilderness.
Because of the elevation, check the forecast shortly before your trip, especially if you’re visiting later in November.
Which California Fall Getaway Should You Choose?
For ocean views and redwoods, I’d choose Mendocino. Go to Paso Robles if food and wine are the priority, or Big Bear Lake if you want lakeside mountain scenery.
Julian has the strongest traditional fall atmosphere with apples and historic Main Street, while Idyllwild is a good choice for a quieter cabin weekend surrounded by forest.
If you’re traveling in November, check the weather and seasonal conditions a few days before leaving, especially for Big Bear and Idyllwild. That gives you the flexibility to choose the getaway that works best for the forecast rather than committing to a mountain trip during poor conditions.
