Is Azucar in Ocean Beach San Diego is worth visiting?
We had heard rave reviews about this place, so naturally, we wanted to check it out for ourselves. We shared a Café Cubano and the Divina dessert cake during our visit.
The Café Cubano was rich and robust and paired perfectly with the cake’s sweet, moist white chocolate layers. The passion fruit curd and raspberries added a tangy burst, while the toasted marshmallow frosting was the ultimate finishing touch.

Is Azucar worth visiting?
Yes! We highly recommend a visit to Azucar Ocean Beach.
This Cuban-style patisserie is the realization of Vivian Hernandez-Jackson’s lifelong dream. It blends her classical French training with Cuban heritage to craft unique desserts and pastries.
Growing up in Miami with Cuban parents, Vivian’s love for baking began early. She went on to study at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris. Later she brought her culinary talent to California, opening Azucar in 2008.
Azucar’s coffee comes from Gavina Coffee Company. This family business that started in Cuba in 1870 and later relocated to California. Their espresso blend, Old Havana Roast, and house coffee, a blend of Colombian and Double French beans, pair perfectly with Vivian’s sweet creations. Their beans come from all over the world.
Focusing on family and supporting charities, this cozy spot has 3 outdoor tables where you can bring your dog.

Azucar‘s reviews
“Absolutely loved this place. The coffee was really good and the service was excellent but wow – the pastries look delicious! I had the cheese roll and it may be my favorite breakfast pastry ever! I just wish I took a photo of it to share! Highly recommend!” – (source)
“I will definitely admit that I’m a food snob; living in NYC it’s only natural. This place was so delicious, we ended up ordering more food to take home. The scones are amazing–This is what a scone should taste like!! The salt/oatmeal cookies are also lovely and lacy. The cinco tres leches was too sweet. The Divina is also wonderful.” – (source)
