Overcrowded trails, brutal heat, and packed parking lots can turn your dream trip into a frustrating mess. After making the trip in October, we saw a completely different side of the park – perfect weather, peaceful hikes, and jaw dropping scenery without the chaos. Timing is everything when visiting these towering giants, and some seasons are way better than others. Here is when to go for the best experience and when to avoid it altogether.

Overall Best Time Of Year To Visit

The overall best time to visit Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks is during the summer season, which spans from June to September. During these months, all park roads are open, and the weather is generally pleasant. Summer offers the perfect opportunity to explore the parks’ beauty without any restrictions.

Compared to other seasons, summer provides the most comfortable weather for outdoor activities such as hiking, wildlife spotting, and scenic drives. The lush greenery and pleasant temperatures make it an ideal time to immerse yourself in the natural wonders of the parks.

Best Month To Visit

While summer is the best season to visit, let’s explore the best month within that season. July and August are the busiest months, with higher visitor numbers and potentially crowded attractions. If you prefer a more tranquil experience, consider visiting in June or September when the crowds start to thin out, and the weather is still great.

If you’re on a budget and looking for cheaper rates, consider visiting in September or October. These months fall under the shoulder season, offering more affordable lodging options and fewer crowds.

Best Time to See Wildlife

If spotting wildlife is high on your priority list, plan your visit for the spring or fall. During these times, animals are more active, and you have better chances of encountering a diversity of species. In the spring, from April to mid-June, you’ll probably see wildlife as they emerge from their winter hibernation. In fall, particularly September and October, you’ll most probably see animals preparing for the upcoming winter.

Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks boast several iconic attractions that you won’t want to miss. For the best experience, here’s a breakdown of the ideal times to visit some of these must-see spots:

  • Moro Rock: The best time to visit Moro Rock, a granite dome offering panoramic views of the parks, is during the summer months when the trail is accessible and the weather is clear. When we visited in October, the views were a bit cloudy from the wildfires so check the conditions before visiting.
  • General Sherman Tree: As the world’s largest tree by volume, the General Sherman Tree is a must-visit. It’s best seen from late spring through early fall when the weather allows easy access to the area and its trails.
  • General Grant Tree: This impressive giant sequoia can be enjoyed year-round, but it’s particularly enchanting during the fall season when the surrounding foliage turns vibrant shades of red, orange, and gold.

Best Time for Activities

The parks offer a wide range of activities for outdoor enthusiasts throughout the year. In the summer, you’ll have a great time hiking, camping, fishing, going on scenic drives, and even horseback riding.

Snowshoeing and cross-country skiing are also popular winter activities, especially in areas with higher elevations. There is even a hut in the middle of the Sierra Nevada mountains called Pear Lake Hut, where experienced backcountry skiers can choose to stay for a few days between December and April!

Make sure to also check out the year round activities in Fresno, as well as in Visalia, the two closest towns to the national parks.

Best Time to Avoid Crowds

If you prefer a quieter experience and wish to avoid crowds, consider visiting the parks in the shoulder seasons of spring and fall. During these times, the parks are less crowded, which also means you’re more likely to see wild animals.
