Step back in time at Nevada City’s Victorian Christmas in California, a beloved tradition since 1978. We visited on Sunday and were enchanted by the magical atmosphere – authentic gas lamps, Victorian carolers, and a towering 25-ft Christmas tree. This family-friendly event transforms the streets into a Victorian-era wonderland. Here are 11 must-see highlights and tips to make the most of your visit!
1. Live Performances All Day

Throughout the event, you’ll find live entertainment happening at different spots. From carolers in Victorian attire to fiddlers, brass bands, and even a walking Christmas tree, the music and performances add to the festive vibe.
2. Kids Can Meet Santa

Kids (and kids at heart) will love visiting Santa upstairs at the Masonic Lodge on North Pine Street. He is ready for photos and to hear your holiday wishes.
3. Snap a Photo with Officers on Horses

Don’t miss the officers on horseback dressed up in festive gear, complete with holiday decorations. It’s a great photo opportunity that perfectly captures the charm of the event!
4. Shop from Over 100 Vendors

Get your holiday shopping done! The streets are lined with over 100 artisan vendors selling unique and local treasures. Whether it’s handmade ornaments, festive décor, or one-of-a-kind gifts, you’ll find something special here.
5. Spot Father Christmas

Unlike the modern Santa, Father Christmas brings old-world charm to the event as he strolls the streets, greeting everyone with cheer.
6. Try Hot Roasted Chestnuts

Stop by the fire pit in the Food Court to watch chestnuts being roasted the old-fashioned way. The aroma is amazing, and they’re free to try!
7. Spot the Famous Walking Christmas Tree

Yes, you read that right – a walking Christmas tree! It’s an entertaining sight and you’ll spot her walking around the streets.
8. Visit the Christmas Tree

The 25-ft tree in Robinson Plaza is decorated with red bows and frosted pinecones. It’s the centerpiece of the event and perfect for holiday photos.
9. Admire the Dickens Village Display

Step into the Alpha Building on Broad Street to see the charming Department 56 Dickens Village Display. These collectible town models are a must-see.
10. Grab a Hot Drink from Choquiero Cacao Cafe

Stay warm with a cup of hot chocolate from Choquiero Cacao Cafe. Their drinks are made with rich, house cacao, and they’re absolutely delicious.
11. Stay Until Dark To See The Lights

Don’t leave until the sun sets! The town lights up beautifully at night, with glowing string lights, gas lamps, and festive garlands. It’s truly magical.
Tips for Visiting

Parking: Street parking is extremely limited. We spent 15-20 minutes driving around before finally finding a spot. If you want to avoid the hassle, take the Rood Center Shuttle ($7 for adults, kids under 15 ride free). But fair warning – the shuttle line can get long! Better yet, consider taking Lyft or Uber.
Crowds: It gets very crowded, so plan for extra time to navigate through the streets and expect lines for food, restrooms, and attractions.
Bring Cash: Many vendors prefer cash, and it’s just easier for quick purchases.
Dress Warm: You’ll be outside for a while, so layer up and stay cozy. A hot drink like hot chocolate from Choquiero Cacao Cafe is a must!
Dress the Part: Want to take the holiday vibe up a notch? Consider dressing in Victorian attire! Many attendees join the fun by donning period-inspired clothing, and it really adds to the charm of the event.
Stay Until Dark: The entire town lights up beautifully after sunset, with glowing string lights, gas lamps, and festive garlands. It’s the perfect way to end your visit!
