Earth Day is a good reminder that helping the planet does not have to feel like a chore. All across California, you’ll find events that let you get outside, have fun, and do something positive at the same time, from coastal cleanups to festivals and park adventures. So if you’re looking for a spring outing with a little more purpose, here are 10 Earth Day events worth checking out.
1. California State Parks Foundation Climate Action Workdays, Statewide: April 11 & April 18
These climate action workdays bring Earth Month back to the basics in the best way. Across California, volunteer projects focus on the real needs of each landscape, from trash cleanup in Old Town San Diego to vegetation restoration at China Camp State Park near San Rafael.
2. Earth Day Napa, Napa Valley: April 18
Earth Day Napa at Oxbow Commons includes educational crafts and games, face painting, food and beer, and live music, and arriving by bike comes with a free bike valet. Then on April 25, the Earth Day Napa Community Cleanup gives people a chance to pitch in at sites around the city.
3. Earth Day at the Bay, Newport Beach: April 18
Set at Upper Newport Bay’s Peter & Mary Muth Interpretive Center, this free family-friendly event brings together food trucks, arts and crafts, live music, and an educational scavenger hunt in a beautiful waterfront setting. Being at the largest remaining estuary in Southern California gives the whole day a stronger connection to the place itself.
4. SLO Earth Fest, San Luis Obispo: April 18
SLO Earth Fest packs a lot into one afternoon without losing that local feel. There’s a kids’ zone, food trucks, local art, live music, environmental booths, a Sustainable Makers Market, and a beer garden with Firestone Walker pours. The EV Showcase also adds something extra, especially with so many people curious about the latest electric vehicles right now. It’s free, but registration is required.
5. Earth Day Festival, San Francisco: April 18
Yerba Buena Gardens is hosting a free Earth Day festival that feels lively, accessible, and easy to turn into a full city outing. Live performances take over the Great Lawn, and the activity lineup includes tree planting, chalk art, ice art, carousel rides, and more throughout the day. It has a nice mix of fun and hands-on participation, which helps it feel more connected to the spirit of Earth Day. An online reservation is requested.
6. Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Festival, North Lake Tahoe: April 25
The Tahoe Truckee Earth Day Festival brings mountain scenery and climate conversations together in a way that feels very true to the area. Held at The Village at Palisades Tahoe, it includes live music, a student trashion show, a climate change exhibit, and booths with hands-on activities and giveaways. There’s also space to learn about the Washoe Tribe, shop local, and take advantage of sustainable travel options like the free shuttle.
7. Earth Day Festival at Courthouse Square, Santa Rosa: April 25
Santa Rosa’s Earth Day Festival keeps the tone upbeat while still staying centered on sustainability. This free, zero-waste event includes kids’ crafts, local food vendors, multicultural entertainment, a honeybee workshop, a composting demo, and a beer garden.
8. Aquarium of the Pacific Earth Day Teen Climate Fest, Long Beach: April 25
This Long Beach event stands out because it is shaped by the Aquarium of the Pacific’s teen climate council, which gives it a more current and thoughtful feel. Displays, activities, presentations, and sustainable art all focus on climate education and protecting the planet. General admission is required.
9. Creek to Bay Cleanup, San Diego County: April 25
Creek to Bay Cleanup is one of the most hands-on Earth Day events in Southern California, and it has a real sense of impact behind it. Volunteer sites are spread across San Diego County, from inland neighborhoods to coastal areas, so the work reaches a wide range of communities and landscapes. Last year, volunteers removed nearly 60,000 pounds of litter, which says a lot about how much a day of action can do.
10. Santa Barbara Earth Day Festival, Santa Barbara: April 25-26
Santa Barbara’s Earth Day Festival is one of the biggest public Earth Day celebrations on the West Coast, and the scale of it is part of the appeal. More than 200 exhibitors, an eco-marketplace, and a car show with electric vehicles and e-bikes give the weekend a lot of range. The event also digs into bigger conversations around clean transportation, solar energy, food systems, and reducing single-use plastic, while still making room for music, family entertainment, a plant-forward food court, and a beer garden.
