Santa Cruz might be known for its surf scene and seaside charm, but there’s a lot more packed into this laid-back California town. In just two days, you can ride a 100-year-old roller coaster, walk through a gravity-defying forest, explore redwoods by train, and eat dinner in a restaurant with its own hillside cable car. This itinerary covers the best of Santa Cruz with a mix of classic attractions, local favorites, and can’t-miss views.
Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk

Start your trip with one of Santa Cruz’s most iconic attractions. The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is a classic oceanfront amusement park with thrill rides, carnival games, and a laid-back vibe that captures the spirit of the California coast. Don’t miss the Giant Dipper, a wooden roller coaster that’s been running since 1924, along with the Cyclone and Undertow, Northern California’s only spinning coaster.
Santa Cruz Wharf

After a few rides, head over to the nearby wharf for lunch. This long pier is packed with restaurants and shops, with great views of the Monterey Bay all around you. Try the seafood at Stagnaro Bros. or sample oysters and smoked salmon while watching sea lions lounging at the far end of the dock.

The Mystery Spot

Once you’ve eaten, make your way inland to one of Santa Cruz’s strangest attractions. The Mystery Spot is known for its weird optical illusions and strange angles that make people appear to tilt or change height. Guided tours are both funny and mind-bending. It’s popular, so book tickets online ahead of time.
West Cliff Drive, Lighthouse Point & Steamer Lane

As the day winds down, take a scenic drive along West Cliff Drive. This 3-mile stretch runs right along the coast with views of cliffs, coves, and surfers below. Stop at Lighthouse Point to check out the Surfing Museum, then walk over to Steamer Lane to watch the pros ride the waves. It’s one of the best sunset spots in town, with dramatic views of the Pacific and surfers silhouetted in the fading light.
Roaring Camp Railroads

The next morning, start your day with a ride through the redwoods. Roaring Camp Railroads takes you on a historic steam train through misty forest trails and open hills. It’s a relaxing, scenic ride that feels like stepping back in time. Tickets sell fast, so book ahead if possible.
Shadowbrook Restaurant

After your train ride, drive into Capitola for one of the most unique meals on the Central Coast. Shadowbrook Restaurant is set on a hillside and includes its own cable car to carry guests down to the dining rooms. The menu features fresh seafood, steaks, and plant-based options, all served in a cozy, romantic setting.
Capitola Village & Beach

Spend the early afternoon exploring Capitola Village. This colorful seaside town is filled with boutique shops, beachside cafes, murals, and a calm sandy beach that’s great for relaxing. Families love the soft waves at Capitola Beach, and it’s an easy place to grab a coffee or sweet treat from Polar Bear, a local ice cream favorite.
Natural Bridges State Beach

Wrap up your trip with a visit to Natural Bridges, one of the most scenic beaches in Santa Cruz. The rocky arch just offshore is a photographer favorite, especially at sunset. Tide pools line the edge of the beach, and from fall through winter, monarch butterflies gather in the eucalyptus grove along the nearby trail.
