This part of Napa Valley feels a bit more relaxed and personal. We spent a few days checking out the food, shops, and small-town vibe and found a lot to like. St. Helena surprised us with local flavor, cool finds, and great wine without the big crowds. Here’s our guide to what to do when you’re in town.

1. Sip Wine and History at Charles Krug Winery

Charles Krug Winery is the oldest winery in Napa Valley, founded in 1861. It’s known for its elegant tasting room, scenic grounds, and a deep connection to Napa’s wine history. We liked learning about the family history while tasting some of the best wines. The outdoor patio is a popular spot on sunny days.
2. Taste Oprah’s Favorite Muffin at The Model Bakery

First started in St. Helena, The Model Bakery is famous for its English muffins, which were featured on Oprah’s Favorite Things list. They’re made fresh daily and usually sell out by early afternoon. The bakery also offers coffee, pastries, and sandwiches. We got there at 10am and there was a short line with a small crowd in the shop.

3. Dine Like a Local at Gott’s Roadside

Also first established in St. Helena, Gott’s Roadside is a casual diner-style restaurant with a strong local following. The menu includes classic burgers, tacos, salads, and milkshakes. It’s all outdoor seating with most of them in the shade thanks to the umbrellas. While it’s also located in downtown Napa and other locations, we recommend coming to the first one.

4. Indulge in Handcrafted Sweets at Woodhouse Chocolate

Woodhouse Chocolate is known for its beautifully packaged, high-end chocolates. The shop is family owned and located in downtown St. Helena. Inside, you’ll find a wide selection of truffles, caramels, and seasonal treats. Stop in for gifts or a sweet souvenir to take home.
5. Try an Ice Cream Flight at Erosion Tap House

Erosion Tap House offers a unique twist on dessert with its rotating ice cream flight. The shop serves several creative flavors in small tasting portions, making it easy to try a few at once. We LOVED this option since we wanted to try a bunch of flavors but didn’t want a whole scoop of each. It’s connected to another space that’s a tap room with craft beer and wine.
6. Browse Art Galleries in Downtown St. Helena

Downtown St. Helena has a variety of art galleries within easy walking distance. Many feature local and regional artists, with styles ranging from modern to traditional. We recommend checking out The Christopher Hill Gallery, Caldwell Snyder Gallery, MEUSE Gallery and AERENA Galleries & Gardens. A few had items for sale, including handmade ceramics and prints.

7. Start Your Visit at the St. Helena Welcome Center

The Welcome Center (also known as St. Helena Chamber of Commerce) is a helpful place to begin your trip. Staff are available to answer questions and offer personalized recommendations. You can pick up free maps, event guides, and brochures. Ask about seasonal events or less-visited attractions for some hidden gems.
8. Explore Old-World Flavor at Napa Valley Olive Oil Manufacturing Co

This family-owned olive oil shop is hidden away in a quiet part of St. Helena. It feels like stepping into an old Italian market. The store has been in operation for over 80 years and retains a rustic, old-world feel. Inside, you’ll find large barrels of olive oil, Italian food products, and local pantry items. Sampling is encouraged, and it’s loved for its authentic charm.
9. Pick Up Gourmet Goods at Olivier Napa Valley

Olivier is a specialty food shop offering olive oils, vinegars, mustards, and other pantry staples. Everything is beautifully packaged and arranged in a bright, inviting space. I sampled a few of the interestingly flavored balsamics. The store staff is helpful and can recommend pairings or local favorites.
10. Discover Vintage Finds at Caractere

Caractere is a boutique shop that focuses on French antiques and vintage home decor. The selection is carefully curated, with a mix of furniture, accessories, and one-of-a-kind pieces. It’s located on the way to downtown St. Helena, right on the highway with a small parking lot so slow down when you’re nearby.
11. Shop Turkish Decor at Ottoman Art

Ottoman Art sells handmade lamps, ceramics, and textiles imported from Turkey. We stopped in while walking downtown and found some of the most colorful lamps, ceramics, rugs, and other home decor. The shop stands out for its vibrant style and cultural variety.
