7. Say hello to California wildlife at the Lindsay Wildlife Experience

The Lindsay Wildlife Experience is a museum that has more than 50 species of California wildlife. The museum is also an educational center with wildlife experts educating more than 100,000 people. It’s also a wildlife hospital; the first one in the US! Annually, the vets treat more than 5000 animals. It also provides free veterinary care to native California wildlife. But make sure to contact them via their Hospital Hotline or email before bringing them in for advice and more information.
The museum has got a small parking lot but there’s free parking across the street at the Walnut Creek Friends Church parking lot (except Sunday mornings). Or you can park on Buena Vista Avenue.
8. Admire the art of garden design at the Ruth Bancroft Garden

The Ruth Bancroft Garden & Nursery is a globally known garden that has a diverse collection of drought-tolerant plants and succulents. With 3.5 acres, this garden is known to be one of the best dry gardens in the world. Known for drought-tolerant gardening, Ruth Bancroft used the art of garden design to collect and maintain plants for over 60 years!
The garden is open all season round with more than 2,000 trees including cactus, shrubs, palm trees and succulents native to Australia, Chile, Mexico, South Africa and California. There’s a nursery and landscape design services to help you get started in creating your very own California desert.
To bring about awareness in the community, there are tours, events, workshops and certificate programs for adults and children. The garden has limited parking with a 4-hour parking time limit, only 1 vehicle per parking space and absolutely no parking if you’re not visiting the garden or nursery.
9. Go back to the 20th century at the Shadelands Ranch Museum

The Shadelands Ranch Museum is one of the largest farms in the Ygnacio Valley, California. Built in 1856 by Hiram Penniman, one of early settlers in America, the farm was one of the first as well in California. Penniman used to plant fruits and nuts with prunes being the most revenue-producing crop.
The 1903 museum takes you back to Walnut Creek in the 20th century with its Colonial Revival architecture and furniture. It’s also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum also offers tours, educational programs, special events and also rentals for private events.

Ride Walnut Creek’s free trolley around the downtown area. The trolley runs daily with a 15-20 minute interval. The trolley loops around starting at Walnut Creek’s BART station near Ygnacio Center and ending at the Fountain at Broadway Plaza and goes back to the BART station. The trolley makes 15 stops around downtown running mainly on South Main St. and South California Blvd.
Some of the places you’ll see on the trolley include Broadway Plaza, Main Street Plaza, Olympic Place, Plaza Escuela, Lesher Center for the Arts, Bedford Gallery, City Hall, Senior Center, Target and Walnut Creek Superior Court.

The bakery also has holiday specialties such as pies, dinner rolls, cinnamon breads and cookie plates.
One of this store’s highlights is that they don’t use preservatives and only use vegetable oil and since most of their items are baked daily, they remain fresh. They also baked all of their products from scratch with an emphasis on high-quality and customer satisfaction.
20. Hike in Diablo Foothills Regional Park

Mount Diablo is located in the 20,000-plus-acre Mount Diablo State Park and with its peak at 3849 ft. Mt. Diablo is unique in its own way as it can look like a double pyramid with North Peak (its peak at 3557 ft.) being the other half of the double pyramid. For an up-close view from the ground, visit the Diablo Foothills Regional Park. This 1060-acre park has tons of trails, seasonal wildflowers and animal & birdlife.
Also while you’re at the Diablo Foothills Park, check out the Castle Rock Recreation Area for its Castle Rock formations in Pine Canyon. A heads up, this area is closed from February through July to protect the peregrine falcons.
21. Catch views from the top of Mt. Diablo at Mt. Diablo State Park

You can reach the top of Mt. Diablo by car, bike, or hiking through Mount Diablo State Park, with summit access via North Gate Road or South Gate Road ($10 entrance fee). Along the way, stop at Diablo Valley Overlook near Juniper Campground for stunning views at 2,900 feet. At the Summit Visitor Center, take in panoramic sights of Lassen Peak, Mount Loma Prieta, the Sierra Nevada, and even Sentinel Dome at Yosemite. For the clearest views, visit after a winter storm when visibility can stretch 200 miles, though summer months can be hazy. Gates open at 8 AM and close at sunset, so plan accordingly!
22. Visit Rock City Park

Before heading out of Mt. Diablo State Park, check out Rock City Park located a few miles near the South Gate entrance. The park has small tunnels and caves, naturally carved out of sandstone rocks. Some of its highlights include: Elephant Rock, Sentinel Rock, Wind Caves, Artist Point and Fossil Ridge. You can picnic here and also camp at Live Oak campground.
23. Immerse yourself in nature in downtown Walnut Creek at Civic Park

The Civic Park has so many things to offer! It’s got 2 playgrounds, a gazebo, library, public art, gardens and a community center with art programs. Also look for the ‘Hand of Peace’ monument located near Walnut Creek Library. The monument was created by Beniamino Bufano, an Italian-born artist who had cut off his right index finger and mailed it to President Woodrow Wilson. He did this as a peaceful protest against 1917’s World War I. (He had accidentally cut it off but legend has it that it was on purpose.)

The Gardens at Heather Farm is a 6-acre garden located inside Heather Farm Park. It is free to the public and is open daily from sunrise to sunset. The garden has 27 attractions including different gardens, groves and displays. Attractions include African sumac trees, a bonsai Japanese black pine, Mexican sunflowers and eleven waterfalls. You can also buy plants at their plant shop with pricing ranging from $1 to $30.
25. Tour a 20th century California ranch, Old Borges Ranch

The Old Borges Ranch is a cattle ranch built in 1899 by Frank Borges and his family. It is located inside Shell Ridge, one of Walnut Creek’s open spaces near the Diablo Foothills Regional Park. Other than cows, the ranch also cares for chickens, goats, pigs and sheep. But the Old Borges Ranch is more than a ranch; it’s got the Borges house, barns, corrals, a blacksmith shop, a ranger station and more.
It’s open daily from 7 AM to sunset and offers free monthly ranch tours and open houses to tour the whole ranch. This historic ranch is also listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
