1. Walk around La Jolla Cove

La Jolla Cove is a stunning, tucked-away beach in San Diego, surrounded by sandstone cliffs and part of a protected marine reserve. Take a walk along the paths around the cove to enjoy panoramic views of the ocean and cliffs—it’s free and absolutely worth it. At low tide, explore tide pools teeming with sea life, and keep an eye out for sea lions lounging on the shore or rocks (from a safe distance!). Even though the beach is small and the water is chilly, the scenery and clear water make this one of SoCal’s most beautiful spots.

2. Spot seahorses, sea dragons & penguins at Birch Aquarium

Sitting on a cliff with ocean views, Birch Aquarium is the go-to spot to see sea life up close. You’ll see coral reefs, sharks, and rays – like Leopard Sharks, Bat Rays, and even the hard-to-spot Pacific Angel Shark. We loved seeing so many seahorses and seeing leafy sea dragons for the first time! Plus, watching the Little Blue Penguins, the world’s smallest penguins, get fed is seriously adorable. Tickets are $30 for adults, with discounts for kids (17 and under) and seniors (60+), but you can save money by grabbing a Go City San Diego pass.

3. Check Out Art Galleries in Downtown

La Jolla’s downtown area is home to over 20 art galleries, each offering something unique. For an unforgettable experience, visit the National Gallery of Fine Art La Jolla on Prospect Street. UCSD Scripps Pier is one of the best spots to catch the sunset in La Jolla. While the pier itself is closed to the public unless you’re on a Birch Aquarium tour, you can walk down a nearby path to get beneath the pier for a perfect photo op. The view of the sun setting over the ocean, framed by the pier’s structure, is unbeatable and completely free to enjoy. Just be prepared for a small crowd, as it’s a popular sunset spot.  

6. See Seals at Children’s Pool in La Jolla

The Children’s Pool in La Jolla is a small, sheltered beach that’s become a favorite spot for harbor seals and their pups. Originally designed as a safe swimming area, it’s now better known for wildlife viewing, especially during pupping season (Dec. 15–May 15), when the beach is closed to the public. You can still watch the seals year-round from the seawall or nearby walkways.

7. Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego

Dubbed the most photographed spot in San Diego by AAA Magazine, it’s also a favorite for weddings thanks to its stunning scenery.

The unpaved trail winds along sandstone bluffs, home to nesting pelicans, cormorants, and other seabirds, with seals and sea lions often spotted near the cove. You can explore the sandy rock edges for closer views – just tread carefully. This short hike takes 1-2 hours and offers a perfect mix of scenery and wildlife in La Jolla.

With plenty of cafes and restaurants nearby, it’s a great spot to spend the day browsing and discovering new finds. 

14. Climb Down to Sunny Jim’s Sea Cave

Sunny Jim’s Sea Cave is known for its stunning views and quirky history. This spot features a 1902 tunnel originally dug for bootlegging, leading straight from the historic Cave Store to the sea cave. For just $10 per adult and $6 for kids (3-17), you can take a self-guided tour down 145 steps through sandstone cliffs. Tours run daily on a first-come, first-served basis. Wear closed-toe shoes since the stairs can be slippery. If you’re not feeling the climb, you can still enjoy breathtaking views from outside the store for free!

15. Watch a Show at La Jolla Playhouse

Mt. Soledad Memorial Park is one of San Diego’s most popular spots, offering breathtaking 360° views of the city, ocean, and surrounding landscapes. The site features an impressive cross monument and 11 walls with plaques honoring American veterans and sharing their stories. Visitors can climb the brick steps to enjoy the stunning views during the day or visit at night to see the city lights. It’s free to explore, but parking is limited, and only portable restrooms are available.

17. Eat Wholesome Dishes at King of Thai

King of Thai isn’t just a restaurant – it’s a taste of Thailand right in La Jolla. We ate there 4 times during our 3-day visit because the food was that good! With authentic flavors, fresh ingredients, and recipes passed down for generations, every dish felt like a trip to Thailand. The elegant decor, friendly service, and top-notch food made it an unforgettable dining experience. If we didn’t have to leave, we’d have gone back for more!

18. Spend A Laid-Back Day In Bird Rock

Bird Rock is a charming seaside micro-neighborhood at the southern tip of La Jolla, just north of Pacific Beach. Its walkable stretch along La Jolla Boulevard offers a mix of coffee shops, bakeries, surf culture, and relaxed coastal vibes. Start your day with a visit to Bird Rock Coffee Roasters or Wayfarer Bread & Pastry, then explore local gems like the Bird Rock Surf Shop or grab a bite at Wheat and Water. Don’t miss Calumet Park for ocean views or one of the dreamy lookout points nearby.

Girard Gourmet has been a La Jolla staple for over 30 years, serving fresh, farm-to-table dishes in a cozy indoor space or on a charming patio. They grow many of their fruits and vegetables in their own organic garden in Julian, CA, so everything is packed with flavor. We tried the Vegetarian Gourmet Sandwich, and it was incredible—like nothing we’ve ever had before! With European-inspired cooking, seasonal ingredients, and top-notch service, it’s the perfect spot for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

25. Kayak the La Jolla Sea Caves

Kayaking the La Jolla Sea Caves is an exciting way to explore the stunning La Jolla Ecological Reserve, where you might see leopard sharks, sea lions, turtles, or even dolphins. Guided tours provide fascinating wildlife info and safely navigate you through the caves. While tours are open to kids 6 and up, changing sea conditions may be tricky for very young children. Bring a waterproof bag for your valuables to avoid paying for a locker and keep your belongings safe and dry!

26. Snorkel or Dive with Leopard Sharks in La Jolla Cove

Guided tours provide all the gear you need – mask, snorkel, fins, and wetsuit – plus a quick lesson before you swim alongside these harmless sharks and colorful reef fish. You’ll need to be comfortable in the water, and access to sea caves depends on conditions. For the best experience, join an early morning tour (like the 10:30am option) when the water is clearer and crowds are smaller.

27. Take The Broken Hill Trail Before Sunset

Broken Hill in Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve offers one of the best sunset views in San Diego. The 3.5-mile loop trail is moderately challenging, but the stunning sunset vistas make it worth the effort. Parking is free along Torrey Pines Road, or you can pay to use the main lot – just arrive early to beat the crowds. Keep in mind that dogs aren’t allowed on this trail.
