Great food cities have a way of turning ordinary meals into moments you remember long after the table is cleared. The most exciting destinations invite you to discover flavors from many cultures, often surprising you with creative twists and new combinations.
San Francisco captures this spirit with a dining scene that mixes classic favorites, bold global influences, and inventive desserts across its vibrant neighborhoods. This listicle highlights the city’s most unforgettable pizzas, curries, sweets, and more so you can plan a delicious food adventure from morning until night.
1. Tony’s Pizza Napoletana

If you’re in San Francisco and craving seriously good pizza, Tony’s Pizza Napoletana in North Beach is the place to be. This award-winning spot, founded by 13-time World Pizza Champion Tony Gemignani, is all about authenticity with a creative twist. The menu covers 12 pizza styles, everything from Neapolitan and Detroit to New York and Sicilian. The Margherita and Detroit-style pizzas are crowd favorites. The wait can be long, but the wood-fired crusts, rich toppings, and friendly service make it worth it.
2. Peaches & Patties

Peaches & Patties at the Ferry Building is all about those killer patties and diverse Caribbean flavors. The curried chicken and lentil patties are perfectly seasoned and the best patties we’ve tasted that we went back again to the Ferry Building just for those patties.

3. Greens Restaurant

Greens Restaurant at Fort Mason has been a San Francisco favorite since 1979, serving creative vegetarian food with stunning Bay views. The menu changes with the seasons, using fresh produce from local farms and their own Green Gulch garden. A window seat gives you an incredible view of the Golden Gate Bridge. Make sure to book a reservation; it’s a popular spot for brunch/lunch.
4. Souvla

If you’re in San Francisco and craving tasty Greek food, Souvla is the place to go. This modern spot serves up fresh, flavorful dishes that are simple yet super satisfying. Their chicken salad is packed with tender meat, fresh greens, and a sprinkle of cheese and a tangy dressing. The Greek fries are a big hit too, often called some of the best in town. Don’t forget to try their frozen Greek yogurt with fun toppings. Souvla is consistently great with many locations around San Francisco.
5. Parada 22

Parada 22 is a cozy Puerto Rican spot in the Haight that people can’t stop raving about. The slow-roasted pork, arroz amarillo with habichuelas blancas, and crispy plantains are favorites, with portions big enough to share. You’ll enjoy the attentive service and welcoming vibe. I ordered the Pollo Enceballoado and it didn’t disappoint with its quantity and quality. If you’re not sure what to order, the Puerto Rican sampler during happy hour is a top pick. This spot really brings the taste of San Juan to San Francisco.
6. La Taqueria

La Taqueria in the Mission is legendary for tacos and its no-rice burritos packed with fresh flavor. The chicken burrito is the star, juicy and grilled. Portions aren’t massive and expect a line, especially on weekends, but it moves quicker than you’d think, and the mariachi singers add to the experience.
7. New Thai Elephant

New Thai Elephant is a hole-in-the-wall favorite for authentic Thai that’s earned high reviews while keeping things low-key. Dishes like the crispy pork belly with Thai basil, red curry chicken, and papaya salad deliver big flavor without being over the top. You’ll love the little details, like Thai iced tea with a teddy bear, shaped ice cubes, and murals that brighten the cozy space. We’ve been to this spot 4 times during our 7-day trip and will come back again.
8. Nepa Indian Cuisine

Nepa Indian Cuisine is an underrated gem serving a delicious mix of Indian and Nepalese dishes. Favorites like butter chicken masala with fluffy garlic naan hit the spot, while complimentary papad and sauces add a nice touch. We ordered a mixed veg curry, chicken kebab and basmati rice and ended with a complimentary dish of gulab jamun. We loved the warm hospitality and prices that feel more than fair for the quality.
9. Sourdough Bread Bowl at Boudin Bakery

Boudin Bakery is a San Francisco icon, famous for its sourdough bread bowls filled with creamy clam chowder. The chowder is hearty, packed with big chunks of clam, and perfect for enjoying by the bay breeze in Fisherman’s Wharf. If you’re vegetarian, try the tomato soup in the bowl. The place gets busy, but the lines move quickly, and the smell of fresh bread alone makes it worth the stop.
10. Irish Coffee at The Buena Vista

The Buena Vista is a historic San Francisco stop where the Irish Coffee was first introduced to the U.S. back in 1952, and the recipe hasn’t changed since. Bartenders line up glasses and craft each one with hot coffee, Tullamore D.E.W. whiskey, sugar, and that perfect cream top, turning the process into a bit of theater. The vibe is lively, with travelers and locals packed in for the views and the iconic boozy coffee. It’s not just a drink, it’s a tradition that feels like a true taste of San Francisco.
11. Mel’s Drive-In

Mel’s Drive-In is a classic San Francisco diner that nails the old-school vibe, jukeboxes at the tables, retro booths, and comfort food all day. There are tons of options with breakfast plates like pancakes and eggs and lunch items like burgers and milkshakes. You’ll love the friendly service, late-night hours, and nostalgic atmosphere that feels straight out of American Graffiti.
12. Wizards & Wands Cafe

Wizards & Wands Cafe is pure magic for Harry Potter fans and anyone who loves a themed night out. The space is packed with fun details with dementors, Ministry of Magic bathrooms, and music that sets the mood without being too loud. Drinks like Unicorn Blood, Butterbeer, and Love Potion are as playful as they sound, and small bites like magic beans that’s smoked at the table.
13. Uji Time Dessert (Japantown)

Uji Time Dessert in Japantown is known for taiyaki soft serve and mochi donuts, plus fun Asian-inspired flavors like matcha, black sesame, and ube. Ordering is done on a tablet outside, and even if there are 4–5 people ahead of you, the wait is usually under 10 minutes. The fish-shaped taiyaki cone is a favorite, but be warned, it melts quickly, so grab a seat in the food court to enjoy it before it gets messy.
14. Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory

The Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory is tucked in Ross Alley, super tiny, but that’s part of the charm. You walk in with your purchase and a look inside to watch the aunties shaping them right in front of you. They make up to 10,000 cookies a day in flavors like vanilla, chocolate, strawberry, and green tea. Lines can get long, especially on weekends, so weekdays are your best bet. You can also make your own fortune to add into your fortune cookie for a few dollars.
15. Ghirardelli Square

Ghirardelli Square is one of those classic San Francisco stops. Yes, it’s touristy, but the sundaes and chocolate really do live up to the hype. The Hot Fudge Sundae is huge (there’s a mini version too if you don’t want to tackle the full thing), and their hot chocolate and frozen mocha get rave reviews. It can be crowded, especially on weekends, and finding a seat isn’t always easy, but there’s plenty to walk around and see once you’re done.
16. Dandelion Chocolate

Dandelion Chocolate, located inside the Ferry Building and on Valencia Street in Mission District is a must-stop if you love clean chocolate. Everything is made onsite, and you can really taste the quality in their chocolate and chocolate items and drinks. The European-style hot chocolate is rich, thick, and comes with a marshmallow and a little cookie on the side, such a nice touch. We loved their spicy Mexican hot chocolate so much that we ordered it twice! If you love their chocolate, we highly recommend booking a chocolate tour at their Factory location in Mission District.
17. Cafe de Casa

Cafe de Casa is the kind of spot you visit once and instantly want to go back to. Their pão de queijo is warm and chewy, the açaí bowls are refreshing, and the coffee might just be the best in San Francisco. You’ll want to re-order the coco bread, panelinha goiana, and fresh juices, with plenty of vegetarian and non-dairy choices too. The staff is super friendly, often switching between English and Portuguese, and the space is clean, bright, and welcoming.
18. Donut Latte at Outset Coffee

Outset Coffee is a small gem if you’re looking for both creativity and quality in your cup. The donut latte is as fun as it sounds, Insta-worthy, and actually really good. You’ll also love the ube cold brew, iced matcha latte, and unique pastries like strawberry mochi donuts, custard tarts, and croque monsieur croissants.
